The Prince of Wales has always been a long-term supporter of action in the service of others; volunteering with Her Majesty's coastguard when at school in Scotland and giving his first speech on the subject in The House of Lords in 1975. In November 2013, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales launched an all-party campaign to support and promote youth social action over the next seven years.

Step Up To Serve of which The Prince of Wales is Patron, seeks to increase the number of 10 to 20 year olds participating in social action, to recognize the contribution young people make to their local communities and to promote the benefit this has to the wealth, health and happiness of the nation.

Together with leaders from business, education, faith groups, youth organizations and the wider voluntary sector, The Prince of Wales was joined by Mr. David Cameron – Prime Minister, Mr. Nick Clegg – Deputy Prime Minister and Mr. Ed Miliband – Leader of the Opposition, to pledge #iwill and make a commitment to support young people acting in the service of others.

To this end, the Trustees of The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Fund have awarded a major grant to support Youth Social Action in the UK and to enable Step Up To Serve achieve its goals.

Step Up To Serve aims to advance education and research in the subject of citizenship and volunteering by young people. The Charity helps young people through providing support and activities which would enable them to participate as responsible citizens and active members of their communities.
